3 Sounds That Indicate Transmission Problems

While the engine of a car provides the power it needs to run, the transmission is responsible for transmitting that power to all the essential places, including the driveshaft, axles, and wheels. Simply put, without this intricate part, your car couldn't move, so it's important to know the signs that your vehicle may need transmission repairs. These symptoms often take the form of sounds, so here’s a closer look at what to keep an ear out for.

Transmission Sounds You Should Never Ignore

1. Whining

A high-pitched whining sound when you switch gears, especially when going in reverse, likely means there’s an issue with the transmission fluid line. Transmission fluid is both a lubricant for the internal parts of the transmission system and a hydraulic fluid that facilitates gearshifts and prevents the system from overheating.

A whining sound is usually a red flag that there’s a clog in the fluid line and fluid can’t reach the filter; when this happens, the transmission system can’t stay lubricated, shifting gears will be more difficult, and overheating becomes a risk. Have a transmission repair professional check out a whining sound as soon as possible.

2. Grinding

Grinding is another transmission repair priority because what you're hearing is often the grinding of the gears, which is never a good thing. Automatic transmissions use a planetary gear system in which multiple gears work together to transfer energy and motion. When one of these gears starts to fail, it can compromise the other gears, and when they can't do their jobs effectively, they’ll grind against one another and jeopardize the ability to shift.

3. Bubbling

A bubbling or gurgling sound is a sign that your transmission fluid is low. Once the fluid falls to a certain point, it won't be able to lubricate the system and will leave air pockets in the fluid line. When shifting gears, these air pockets make a bubbling or gurgling sound. Low fluid can cause serious damage to your transmission, so be sure to stay on top of routine vehicle maintenance and regular fluid-level checks.
